Waterloo Region Museum is the largest community museum in Ontario. Our main gallery tells the story of Waterloo Region and our feature gallery showcases local and travelling exhibits from around the world. Waterloo Region Museum is open daily and is the entrance to Doon Heritage Village.

Doon Heritage Village is a picturesque 60 acre living history village that shows visitors what life was like in Waterloo Region in 1914. The village is open seasonally from May 1 to December 23. One admission price includes entry to the Waterloo Region Museum exhibit galleries and village.

Joseph Schneider Haus is a dynamic community museum and local landmark in downtown Kitchener that is a National Historic Site. The 1816 Georgian frame farmhouse was built by one of the area’s first pioneers, Joseph Schneider, a Pennsylvania-German Mennonite.

McDougall Cottage, an 1858 granite and limestone labourer’s dwelling, is located in downtown Cambridge. Home for more than a century to two families of hardworking Scots, the McDougalls and the Bairds, this charming cottage boasts the most spectacular hand-painted friezes and trompe l’oeil ceilings in Ontario.

The Waterloo Region Museum is pleased to partner with the Kitchener-Waterloo Humane Society to present their Tales for Tales reading program. Every Tuesday morning in July and August at 10:30 a.m. in the museum, there will be a themed storytelling for children followed by an opportunity for children to have a one on one reading session with a dog – Tales for Tails. Everyone is welcome to the themed storytelling but there are limited spots for one on one reading with the dog and children must be signed up upon arrival on a first come, first serve basis.

Join Archaeologist John MacDonald as he leads us through a talk on archaeology of the area with a focus on his studies at RARE Charitable Reserve. RARE is a 900+ acres land reserve, in the Blair area of Cambridge, with 130 archaeological sites found so far which are significant enough to be registered with the Province of Ontario. They have even discovered a spear point that dates back 10,500 years. (raresites.org)

Hooking rugs to warm the floors or decorate walls has been part of the Canadian cultural mosaic since the mid 1800's. Items were created using burlap from seed or sugar bags, old clothing no longer wearable and torn into strips and hooked using a bent over nail. The same technique for pulling loops used centuries ago are still used today.
